About Emma

Hi! This is Emma speaking here. Welcome, welcome to Studio Eloise. Please accept my sincerest apology and appreciation if you are coming back to Studio Eloise!

Before we start please allow me to introduce myself.

I’m a Korean living in NYC for my 11th year. A lot has happened since I moved to US and two of the biggest things are starting Studio Eloise and having a human child :-)

  1. How and why did I start Studio Eloise?
When we adopted our first pup I found all the store bought clothings were not fitting well. I was especially unhappy with how short they were. Sewing has been one of my many hobbies for a long time, so I decided to study and practice more. When I finally felt like I got good enough to sell my creations to other people I opened my shop on Etsy. It was just a fun side hustle until I decided to take a course at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) specializing Pet Product Design and Marketing. After I finished the course I quit my day job and started to invest my whole life to Studio Eloise.

Over the years I perfected tee and bandana patterns to fit well for most dogs. (My patterns are actually one of my most treasured items in my life. I should really make copies and put them in the emergency go bag…)

  2. What happened and why was I gone for so long?
Well.. I had a major health crisis after giving birth to my son. I…um…had a near death experience. Thankfully to wonderful doctors and staffs at Weill Cornell Medicine I was able to recover without permanent damage to my major organs but aftermath of such an experience went on for a long time. I was extremely weak and I had to take care of my infant while recovering.
Still, I planned to come back in smaller scale back in 2020 but you know the story. COVID happened + I had another health issue which was particularly difficult resolve since it was very hard to find specialists who would actually see patients in person during pandemic.
Meanwhile my workspace has been occupied by my husband who still works from home most of the time except when he has to go to a court :-(

  3. How did I managed to come back?
Time does solve most of life’s problems I guess. I had my painful health issue fixed while I was visiting Korea back in 2021. Things has been hectic but going smoothly for the first time in years in 2022!
I started to illustrate (more about that story here) and my now a toddler son, Ezra started to attend school this September. I had no idea how mentally cornered I was until I was able to have my alone time everyday while Ezra is at school. Not that I was miserable or unhappy, but I think I basically shoved creative-self somewhere deep in my brain and tried hard to keep it covered so I can deal with my daily life. (By the way, Ezra is such an angel. He was an extremely easy going baby as if he knew what I was going through. Even now he’s grown into this happy little toddler who sprinkles joy throughout my day.)

Anyway, there was some struggle taking my workspace back from my husband but I finally have my own space back which allows me to be so much more productive and creative. I have been working non-stop ever since the space’s became mine and mine only. I’m here thinking this will be like starting all over again from the scratch but nonetheless I will keep creating and try my best to grow Studio Eloise.

About Elly

Elly has been a boss, a model and a muse for Studio Eloise. Eloise is actually Elly’s full name :-)

Now she’s toothless and she became the world’s messiest eater. She was also constantly losing weight so we had done a ton of different tests done to find out the cause but we couldn’t find any yet (She used to weigh 4.5 lbs but now she weighs 3.5 lbs. She feels like a feather..🥲) We did find something on her liver during our quest to find out the cause of her weight loss. It turned out benign and just something we have to keep track of every 6 months.

She is definitely not running, fetching, energetic pup anymore but she doesn’t have any major health issues. I’m so grateful for that.

What’s in the future?

I’m definitely going to keep churning out new designs, new types of goodies. I definitely want to develop design & illustration skills furthermore. I’m also gonna be consistent but yet, we’ll keep things loosely structured (this is kind of a promise I made to myself which seems to be very difficult to achieve as of now..) Anyway the no.1 goal is to stick around without getting overwhelmed! How hard can it be..?

And one more thing about Elly’s account, I think I’m going to move things around a little bit. Since Elly’s health is declining I don’t want to bother her too much with taking pictures of her. Instead I think I might want to share more of behind the scene like how things gets made, easy diy someone interested could try, etc. It all sounds so good in my head right now but hey, I’m thinking out loud here. Let’s see how things go and I hope you’ll be there with me too.

Much love,

Emma + Elly
